The Senate Budget Committee approved a balanced 1981 budget Thursday that calls for steep increases in defense spending, sharp cuts in domestic programs and a $10.1 billion surplus. Scientists are certain that more lava eruptions from Mount St. Helens in Washington is likely. A locomotive crashed into a chemical tanker car at a rail yard in Somerville, Mass. Thursday, releasing lethal gas that sent at least 74 persons to hospitals and forced the evacua tion of about 7,000 others. Tonight at 7:30 the Polk County Young Democrats are having a re-organizational meeting at the courthouse in Columbus. Tuesday at 9:30 a-.m. the Tryon Photographic Society is having a field trip with members meeting at the parking lot of the Congregational Church. The county and town officers are closed today. Commissioners Meet Tuesday At 3 The Polk County Con.mission- ers will meet Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the courthouse in Columbus Tryon Lions Meet Tuesday The Tryon Lions Club will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at The Dinner Bell. The ladies will be guests of the club. Davis Kirby will show slides of “A Boat Trip Down the Nile”. Marion Brock is incharge of the program. Quakers Meet Area Friends (Quakers) will meet at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kellogg for the remainder of April. All are welcome at these Wednesday evening meetings at 7:30. APR 7, 1980 First Aid Class Beginning April 15, there will be a class in First Aid held at St Luke's Hospital. This class will be taught by Ruth Lynch and will include both basic and more advanced First Aid techniques. The course is designed to prepare students to deal with acciden* and emergency situations both at home and on the job. The class will meet from 6:30 to 9:15 twice a week at St Luke's Hospital. The cost for the course is $9.75. (There is no charge for those over 65) This course may be taken for college credit if desired. Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Apr. 25th The Meeting Place will honor their volunteers with an appreci ation luncheon on Friday, April 25, 12:30 at the center. Over 150 hours are given weekly by dedicated individuals from the surrounding communi ties to the senior center. Various areas in which volunteers serve include — Polk County Commis sion on Aging, lobby and dining hostesses, Peppermint Gift Shoppe and Guild, bingo, exercis ing, arts and crafts and discussion.
